Suggestions for Video Editing Program?

As I haven't used any other than basic Windows Movie Maker, what would be the next step from here to make some cool videos?

If I remember correctly I have a friend who did some cool light saber effects using Adobe After Effects.

It depends what kind of computer you have. If you have an Apple you want to go with Final Cut Pro. If you have Windows or anything else, I'd go with Sony Vegas Pro.
